URDUJA FILM FESTIVAL
Princess Urduja:
URDUJA --- a 14th century
warrior-princess who ruled the Kingdom of Tawalisi in Pangasinan. She was
famous for leading a group of woman warriors who were skilled fighters,
equestrian and archers. Historical reference to Princess Urduja can be found in
the travel account of Ibn Battuta, a Muslim traveler from Morocco. He stopped
by Tawalisi on his way to China and had a startling encounter with the famous
Princess Urduja.
Princess Urduja is a figure from
Philippine legend, a warrior princess who have ruled the kingdom of Tawalisi in
the province of Pangasinan known for her beauty, wisdom, strength and agility.
In 1916, Austin Craig's paper
entitled "The Particulars of the Philippines Pre-Spanish Past" quoted
Jose Rizal's strong belief in Ibn Battuta's historical journey to Tawalisi and
encounter with Princess Urduja. Though the accuracy is in contention among
scholars, Urduja is still considered a very popular heroine and a formidable Philippine
Icon.
